You may be thinking that strumming is as easy plucking the strings of your guitar simultaneously. It could work that way. But like any other form of art just as playing guitar is, strumming has to be learned with all its ABC’s to be taken note of.
Get your pick and fine tune your guitar. A help from an expert tuner will be better. Now that you are off the plan stamp duty, get ready to follow the basic pattern which is strumming the guitar eight times, four beats long. Try to slow down the pace of your strum until you get the rhythm. Is it easy? Well that is again just the basic pattern.
The direction of your strum would depend on the guitar that you are using. If you are using the acoustic guitar, strum over the sound hole. If you are using the electric guitar, strum over the body. You have to make sure that all strings are in proper condition to avoid uncoordinated sound. Do not be tough on the strings. You might break them or if not, you might just create noise instead of music.
The movement of your arms should be so keen you are just like trying to wipe it up and down. Never lose balance. Relax. It would be easier for you if you are just sitting down comfortably. Besides, learning how to play guitar could cause some body pains later on. Do not aggravate the inevitable.
Although it is okay to use your bare fingers in strumming the guitar, you would probably get wounded after doing so if you have a sensitive skin. Anyway, for what it’s worth, there is no gain if there’s no pain. Get your fingers ready then and play it all up to the beat!
